A 35 -year-old Gweru man is battling for life at Gweru Provincial Hospital after his teenage wife scalded him with cooking oil while he was fast asleep, a magistrate heard yesterday. Rosemary Chingoro, 18, of Woodlands Park suburb, appeared before Gweru magistrate, Tayengwa Chibanda, facing a domestic violence charge after scalding her husband, Cephas January with cooking oil.

The complainant sustained burns on the face, arms and chest. Chingoro, who is pleading not guilty to the charge, was remanded out of custody on free bail to September 9.

She was ordered to report at Nehanda Police Station every Friday between 6AM and 6PM and to stay at her given address until the case is finalised.

Prosecuting, Khumbula Ncomanzi said on Monday, Chingoro went to Woodlands Shopping Centre at around 10PM to look for her husband and the two then went home together.

The court heard that on arrival at their lodgings, January retired to bed leaving Chingoro awake.

“Chingoro then boiled cooking oil and poured it on January who was sleeping,” said Ncomanzi.

He said January screamed alerting neighbours who rushed to the couple’s room to investigate.

Ncomanzi said the neighbours found January writhing in pain and immediately called an ambulance which rushed him to Gweru Provincial Hospital.
