producer of sungura music, said women should not allow a situation whereby a certain music genre is said to be a preserve of men.
“As women we should venture into sungura music which used to be a preserve of men and use the same music genre to fight gender-based violence,” said Maraire.
She said there was a misconception that only men could sing sungura.
Maraire said women should prove that they are equal to men by venturing into all areas that used to be dominated by men.
“My wish is that women should be empowered so that they are able to challenge male sungura gurus. I understand and believe we can make it big in the music industry at the same time empowering ourselves.
“It has always been my dream and wish to join and play sungura music after I was inspired by Alick Macheso. At the moment my performance is good enough to give Macheso a run for his money.
“My debut album Vematongo propelled me to dizzy heights and I have realised that as women we can make it in this male dominated genre,” said Maraire.
The album has songs that encourage women to excel in everything they do.
Maraire said her second album, Kumafaro, will be released soon.
The 26-year old Maraire was a backing vocalist for Jeys Marabini before she formed her own band Orchestra Kuravira in 2009.
