Women cricket team off to India

Four teenagers are part of the Zimbabwe Women’s team that travels to India today for a 17-day training camp.

Kelis Ndhlovu, who captained the Zimbabwe Under-19 Women’s side at the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup in January, her vice Adel Zimunu and bowler Kudzai Chigora are among the 16 players selected.

Fourteen-year-old Beloved Biza has also been rewarded for good performances in domestic games.

There are several changes to the team that toured Thailand this year.

Wicketkeeper-batter Modester Mupachikwa will miss the camp as she is currently playing and coaching in Australia, while regulars Pellagia Mujaji and Loryn Phiri did not make the squad.

Batter Nyasha Gwanzura and wicketkeeper Chiyedza Dhururu are back in the fold, having last featured for the national side in May 2022 during the triangular series hosted by Namibia.

Zimbabwe Women will leave  return on November 10.

Head Coach Gary Brent is using the tour as part of preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier set for Uganda in December.

“We are obviously working up towards Uganda, using this to give some of the youngsters some expo-sure at this level, but also getting everybody working really hard and getting us ready for the qualifiers,” he said.  Zimbabwe will join Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and the hosts Uganda in the regional qualifier.

Two teams will proceed to the final qualification stage, the global qualifier.
