ZIMBABWE Women’s Premier Soccer League boss Chido Chizondo believes the league can change for the better.
Chido, who has been in football trenches for more than a decade with FC Platinum, is months into mission impossible.
The world over, it has been difficult for the game to come at par with their male counterparts.
As a result, FIFA and Football Associations have had to make deliberate policies that promote the game.
ZWPSL is no exception, and scenes at the crowning ceremony of Herentals Queens as 2025 champions, was a glimpse of the happiness brought by women’s football if developed to greater heights.
As the champions showed up at Gwanzura on Saturday immaculately dressed, it was a reminder of the need to keep the smiles that way the whole season.
While Herentals as a club have a fair share of that happiness, the majority of the clubs cannot claim that.
Speaking on the sidelines of the presentation, Chizondo said the small steps they are taking to improve the game will go a long way.
“This trophy presentation marks the beginning of a new direction for the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League,” said Chizondo.
“It’s a small but critical step to show Zimbabwe and the world that our league is changing,” she said.
“Our transformation is a work in progress. For people and sponsors to be attracted to us, they must believe in our capabilities.”
Chizondo believes women’s football is able to attract own sponsors if given the room to develop.
“Celebrating our achievements is a major step towards proving what these women are capable of and encouraging sponsors to come on board.
“We are very thankful for what Utano has done for our league. Our hope is that more people will see their efforts and be moved to support the girls, who are highly competitive and deserve that backing.
“Opportunities and presentations like this will motivate the girls immensely, giving them the faith to continue pushing and become winners at the end of every season.”
On relegation, Chizondo said three teams will be going down.
“This season, the relegation system has been adjusted. Because one team has dropped off, we will be relegating three teams and promoting four from the lower division,” she said.
