Women key for development: Ndlukula

Business Reporter.
Government has been urged to enact policies that encourage, the participation of women in most critical sectors of the economy, especially the mining and banking sectors. Women Alliance of Business Association in Zimbabwe chairperson Ms Divine Ndlukula, said the potential of women in economic development continues to be hindered by lack of an enabling environment that gives them access to such sectors.

“Most women have been relegated to operating at micro-level and it is high time that the policy makers implement measures to make sure that women emerge from their shells.

“Women’s contributions to the economy have not been fully recognised, yet it is known that women are going to be influential game changers in ensuring sustainable development of the nation,” Ms Ndlukula said.

She also said that a few women have so far benefited from the indigenisation and economic empowerment programmes.
“If we look at some of the clauses in the indigenisation law, there are clauses that support the emancipation of women economically but unfortunately only men have benefited, which is a worrying point,” she said.

To this end, WABAZ in conjunction with the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce will hold the inaugural Women in Enterprise Conference and Awards on November 1 this year.

The conference aims to create a platform for dialogue among upcoming and established businesswomen in the country.
“The conference is going to make women aware on the importance of taking part in the driving of the economy as the country is heading for a new economic dispensation.

“Corporate leaders and policy makers will be present as we are trying to negotiate a smooth way through towards empowerment of all the women in the country,” Mrs Ndlukula said.

The event will be officially opened by Vice President Joice Mujuru and other influential women from southern Africa like Annie Boddington are expected to grace the event.

The conference will be held under the theme “The roadmap to Zimbabwe’s desired future, assessing and recognising women contribution to the economy”.

The economy can grow at a faster rate if more women are involved in more economic activities said Ms Ndukula
