Women leaders have been urged to be exemplary in their conduct so that they create opportunities for other females.
This came up at the Zimbabwe Parliamentary Women’s Caucus (ZWPC) workshop in Harare last week where parliamentarians were caucusing on 50/50 representation.
In separate interviews, Senate President Cde Mabel Chinomona, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Cde Tsitsi Gezi and chairperson of the ZWPC, Cde Goodluck Kwaramba, concurred that women in leadership positions needed to be exemplary.
Cde Chinomona singled out Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, for special praise.
“If they get an opportunity they should perform to the best of their abilities so that even our male counterparts can see that a constituency can develop with a female leader,” said Cde Chinomona.
“Even if you get a ministerial post you should do your best like what the Minister of Information is doing, she is doing very well, so that is what even our children can emulate.
“Even those who are at school must work hard so that we have competent leaders and professionals from their respective areas of speciality.”
Cde Chinomona urged female legislators not to settle for inferior roles, but to aspire for major roles.
This was reaffirmed by Cde Gezi who said women must work hard to ensure that the quality of their work speaks for itself.
Cde Kwaramba implored women to do well.
“Women leaders must work hard to buttress what we are advocating for,” she said. “But from experience, I know they work very hard.”
In her presentation, Advocate Choice Damiso said there was no justification for marginalising women on the basis of talent.
