THE Zimbabwe senior women’s volleyball team has had a mixed start to their campaign in the FIVB Women’s World Championship Zone Six qualifiers winning one and losing the other of their two opening matches in Zambia. Zimbabwe were on Tuesday two sets down to Mozambique before clawing their way back into the game to take it to the decider. They could however not hold their nerves losing the fifth and final set to hand our eastern neighbours a 3-2 (25-18, 25-18, 24-26, 23-25, 15-7) win on the first day of the championships.
Zimbabwe came right yesterday winning 3-1 against Zambia to entertain hopes of winning one of two berths for the continental qualifier finals.
Zambia had claimed first victory of the tournament over Swaziland 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-18) in Lusaka.
Favourites Botswana beat Namibia 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-13).
Outstanding on the first day for Zambia was star player Tilabilenji Mvunga who was efficient in her attacks from all positions on the court.
According to the Confederation of African Volleyball, Mozambique played the best game of the opening day when they rebounded after Zimbabwe came back from 0-2 to 2-2 as they dominated the tiebreaker to win the tough match 3-2 over the Vulindlela Moyo coached team that is missing half of the team due to high school and college examinations.
Zimbabwe are expected to play Namibia in a match they are tipped to win today with the tournament’s key fixture being the clash with Botswana tomorrow before they entertain Swaziland on Saturday.
If they sail past Botswana, a qualification to the continental finals would have been secured.
