THE Zimbabwe Women Football Super League will only end next year following the clubs’ failure to complete their 2014 league fixtures. The last games of the league are tentatively set to be played on 31 January and the ZWF hopes to have ironed out issues to do with relegation by the time the league ends. ZWF board member competitions Cecilia Gambe said they were still battling to come up with a relegation format but had come up with a framework which would be the basis for relegation.
She said they wanted to remain with 12 teams next year instead of the current 14 and that they intended to relegate and promote four teams from the regional leagues.
Gambe, however, said consultations were still ongoing as they wanted to reach consensus on the format.
“I have been going around consulting with various stakeholders on the issue but what has come out is that we are going to relegate four teams and promote the winners of each of the four regional leagues. However, next year we want to have 12 teams so we need to see how we are going to juggle around with the issue of the other two teams,” she said.
Gambe said clubs would be given time to fulfill their matches and if they failed to do so the league would have no option but declare them walkovers.
Gambe said Rhinos has offered Bulawayo teams, Borrow Jets and Inline accommodation and food hence the clubs would only pay for their transport.
“I am sure they would be able to fulfill their away fixtures through coming to Harare and playing the teams here and then Tenax and on their way back to Bulawayo they pass through Gweru and play Chipembere. All teams are expected to play their scheduled matches without fail,” she said.
