After the recent Zimbabwe Rugby Union elections that ushered in a new three-men presidium, concerns have been raised about the future of the sport in the region.
During the elections which saw former Sable, Aaron Jahni leaving office after a successful tenure, Losson Mtongwiza was elected president while former Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board chairman and TAG co-ordinator, Thembelani Ncube was elected vice president (South).
Ncube is in charge of overseeing the sport in the South of the country comprising Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo and the Midlands. Many believe he has a mammoth task to keep the sport alive in the region.
Although he had stepped down as provincial chairman, Ncube’s time was fraught with challenges including the chaos surrounding the provincial Under-20 team, concerns over league management and stunted grassroots development.
“I have nothing personal against him, but his last term had many issues and he has to dig deep into his skills and experience to make things happen this time around and ensure that he wins over everyone involved in the game in this region,” said a local coach.
