THE $4 million Redcliff water and sewer reticulation project has stalled after workers at the site embarked on an industrial action demanding their salaries, resulting in no work being done for the past six months.
The project, which was bankrolled by the African Development Bank (ADB), was supposed to be completed in December after works commenced in February.
Redcliff Mayor Councillor Fred Kapuya said the project might not meet its December completion deadline as the contractor, Drawcard Construction’s employees have been on strike for the past six months.
The local company was awarded the tender for the project in January which would see a complete overhaul of the municipality’s sewer and water reticulation system.
“We are five months behind with the project hence we are afraid that we will not be able to meet our target for completion,” he said.
Cllr Kapuya said that over half a million dollars was deposited into the account of the contractor before the project commenced but it is struggling to pay its employees.
