World conference on the rights of women proposed

The Rhodesia Herald, 19 January 1974

NEW YORK. – The United States has proposed that a world conference on women’s rights be held in 1975, which the United Nations has proclaimed International Women’s Year.

The proposal, made in the UN Commission on the Status of Women, was that the commission should recommend a resolution for the Economic and Social Council to adopt, calling for such a conference.

The stated purpose of the conference would be to check on UN progress towards carrying out the commission’s recommendations for bettering the status of women. – Iana-AP.

LESSONS FOR TODAY

  • The UN has so far organised four international conferences on women: Mexico City, 1975; Copenhagen, 1980; Nairobi, 1985 and Beijing in 1995.
  • The 1995 Beijing conference was a landmark event that resulted in the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action and was adopted by 189 countries.
  • There are 12 critical areas of concern that the Beijing policy document has been dealing with: women and poverty; women and health; violence against women; women in power and decision-making; women and the media; the girl child, among others. Zimbabwe has been grappling with these critical areas in an effort to ensure that women’s voices and rights are heard and respected.
  • Zimbabwe is happy that the UN Secretary-General Antonio Gueterres on January 2, 2024, appointed Ms Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda as UN Women deputy executive director for Normative Support, United Nations System Coordination and Programme Results.
