WITH preparations for hosting the 2027 World Cup in motion, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) is set to expand the capacity of the country’s two main cricket grounds, Harare Sports Club and Bulawayo’s Queens Sports Club, while plans to build a cricket stadium in the resort town of Victoria Falls are underway.
Zimbabwe will co-host the global showcase with Namibia and South Africa.
The event will come a year after Zimbabwe, together with Namibia, would have hosted the Under-19 World Cup.
Three years before the World Cup, the local cricket motherboard is ready for another shot after hosting the same event more than two decades ago.
“We now have a lot of fans who are interested in coming and watching cricket, and the qualifiers showed us that the Harare Sports Club has become small, the Queens Sports Club has also become small in terms of capacity,” said ZC managing director Givemore Makoni. “So, we’re looking at increasing the capacity at these grounds, while plans to build a new stadium in Victoria Falls are on course. I can say that work has already started on a number of facilities to make sure that we increase capacity and I’m sure by 2027 or by 2026, we should be able to have all those facilities up and running. — Zimpapers Sports Hub.
