FC HUNTERS could provide a sizeable contingent to Zimbabwe’s Under-23 side when coach Marc Sanchez names his squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Mauritius.
Zimbabwe host Mauritius in the first leg on September 28 before travelling for the return match on October 6.
Mafious Chihweta, Tadiwa Chakuchichi, Tadiwanashe Huni, Junior Meya, Benjamin Goliath, Elder Chirima, Ordain Sira, Vhusimuzi Ngwenya and Rasmarley Chipango are among the Hunters youngsters pushing for places in Sanchez’s squad.
CAPS United attacking duo Allen Mukombedzi and Malcolm Banisy, as well as Dynamos pair Anotida Gwatidzo and Witness Shave, are also expected to come under consideration.
For Hunters coach Nesbert “Yabo” Saruchera, strong representation in the Young Warriors would be a reward for the faith he has shown in young players during the club’s maiden Premiership season.
Several of the youngsters have already played significant minutes in the top flight.
Meya and Goliath have made 25 league appearances each, while Huni, Chirima and Chipango have featured 22 times apiece.
Saruchera has consistently backed young talent, drawing from his own experience when the late Ashton “Papa” Nyazika gave him an opportunity at Black Rhinos while he was still a schoolboy.
“I feel it is my turn to develop young talent in Zimbabwe so that our football can grow,” said Saruchera.
“If I see a talented boy, I will give him an opportunity to shine.”
That approach has given several Hunters youngsters regular Premiership football at a stage when many players of their age struggle for game time.
Sanchez has indicated that he is keeping an eye on players who can fit into the style he wants to build with the Young Warriors as preparations begin for the Mauritius assignment.
Saruchera believes the search should also extend beyond the Premiership.
“We have raw talent playing in the lower divisions,” he said.
“I bet if he extends his net there, many will be surprised. There is enough talent competing week in, week out capable of representing the Young Warriors.”
But it is the possibility of several of his own players graduating to the national Under-23 side that would give Saruchera the greatest satisfaction.
