home town and whenever I trek down to the City of Progress I almost always feel like a “newbie” since everything has changed.
The people have changed, things are not the same anymore, the neighbourhood has grown especially now that there is the Midlands State University, there is so much traffic going in that direction.
Perhaps you must be wondering why I am saying all this. It’s because like everybody else, Heroes holiday is the time we go back and reflect on those who fought for us and traditionally it is the time that most people unveil tombstones.
So for me this year’s Heroes’ holiday was indeed memorable I went back to my roots and had lots of fun. And now coming to today’s issue I intend to highlight one or two things about the recent Miss World contest held in Ordos, China.
ZBCTV screened the event on Saturday and I could not help but reminisce during last year’s Miss World contest held in London when yours truly attended the event thanks to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority.
One of the things that the Miss World organisers, Julia Morley in particular, is that the introduction of points or votes is clearly confusing and unjust.
Although last year’s Miss Zimbabwe Malaika Mushandu managed to pull through to the top 15, it was difficult to follow the point system and how she earned the marks. And this year as appeared on the small screens our lovely Bongani Dlakama was beaten to it in every discipline.
She failed in the talent show, Beauty with a Purpose and others just like that. I know for any contestant to earn more marks they should at least come out tops in any one of the categories which are held prior to the crowing ceremony.
It appears Bongani was too reserved and she never came out of her shell like the other contestants. This must have reduced her chances of making it to the semi-finals.
I remember last year when I met the Miss World organisers for the first time. They told me how aggressive and energetic Malaika was in camp and I believe this is what Bongani should have done if she really wanted to make am impact. We don’t want a repeat of what happened when Zimbabwean housemates Roki and Maneta were disqualified from the reality game show or put the blame on anyone but we know Bongani represented us well at the Miss World pageant, the mere mention of Zimbabwe at such an event brought a sense of pride.
