August holds special significance in the Zimbabwean calendar, as both living and departed heroes are honoured across various sectors.
This spirit of celebrating Heroes’ Day dates back to 1980, when Zimbabwe gained political independence from Britain.
The achievements of these heroes, which continue to inspire future generations, are hard to overlook.
In the creative sector—including film, music, dance, theater, drama, and comedy—change-makers are also being recognised.
It’s fascinating to see how comedy has evolved since 1980, and the drive to instil this spirit in younger generations is refreshing.
One notable figure leading this new wave of comedians is Dillan “DC” Chiota, 22, who is making waves in comedy circles.
DC, now a regular performer at The Hyatt Regency Hotel (formerly Meikles Hotel), plans to host his own belated Heroes Day celebrations on August 16, using laughter as a tribute.
He returns to the venue in style after renewing his contract, alongside fellow comedians from his generation, including Ckanyiso, Lebohang, Nevill, and MC Josh Mukahanana.
This group also includes rising stars like Mike Chipere, Munya Guramatunhu, David Chimusoro, and Tinotenda Kurwaisimba, all excelling in the craft.
In a recent interview, DC, responding to public demand, expressed his excitement about returning to the stage.
“I’m thrilled to announce my comeback to stand-up comedy after a well-deserved break in July. Organizing the Back2Back Live Stand-up Comedy Nights was a monumental task, especially with two sold-out shows on consecutive nights.
“It was a nerve-wracking experience, but the support of talented performers like Tinaye Wayne, Josh Mukahana, and Ckanyiso was instrumental in making the event a success,” he shared.
“During my break, I realised how much I missed the anticipation and excitement of performing live. Despite the initial rest, I was eager to get back on stage.
“ I’ve used this time to recharge and meticulously plan my next event. I’m confident that August will mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Harare’s comedy scene, with premium events that will continue to thrill audiences. I’m optimistic about the future and look forward to sustaining this momentum.”
At just 22 years old, and after years of honing his craft under the mentorship of seasoned stars, DC has emerged as part of a new wave of comedians hosting commercial shows in Harare.
He praised comedy for its role in creating memories and providing relief to those facing challenges.
