Zimbabwe’s Young Gems hammered hosts Botswana to cap a remarkable Netball World Youth Cup Qualifying campaign in style at the University of Botswana yesterday.
Having already made local history by qualifying for the 2017 Netball Youth Cup, Zimbabwe thrashed Botswana 55-26 to take second position in the eight-team tournament.
South Africa, who beat Uganda 55-29 yesterday, finished the tournament unbeaten with 14 points to take pole position, while Uganda (10 points) took the third place.
The three nations and World Cup hosts Botswana will represent Africa at the global competition next year.
Zimbabwe head coach Ropafadzo Mutsauki had urged his girls to put the icing on the cake with a victory and his wish was granted.
“The girls played to instructions”, he said. “It was important to have a good start and win the first quarter. I am glad we achieved that and won the Botswana game.”
The 40-year-old coach hailed the Young Gems for raising the country’s flag high.
“I am so happy with our feat. This is for our beloved Zimbabwe, we are so proud to have raised our flag high. It shows our netball is improving as a country,” he said.
