A 12-year-old musical prodigy, Muntu the Living Proof, proved that age is just a number when he shared the stage with some of the biggest names in Zimbabwe’s entertainment industry at the highly anticipated Maskadi Festive Event held at the BAC in Bulawayo over the weekend.
The young hip-hop artiste, who hails from the border town of Plumtree, was backed by six energetic dancers, forming a formidable seven-member ensemble.
His performance drew hundreds of ecstatic fans towards the stage as he proudly raised the Plumtree flag with passion and confidence.
Before launching into his electrifying set, the young star took a moment to acknowledge the person who has guided his rising career.
“I would like to thank Rashid Kay, my producer, for his professional work that has brought me this far. Today, as I perform at this big event, it is you who made it possible. I look forward to continuing our smooth working relationship. Thank you,” said Muntu.
The hip-hop artiste delivered a medley of his hit songs, commanding the stage with a confidence that belied his tender age and drawing the crowd ever closer.
However, the evening was not merely about performing for Muntu. It was also an opportunity to network and rub shoulders with music royalty, including Jeys Marabini, Madlela Skhobokhobo, Zinja Ziyamluma and several other established artistes.
Veteran musician Jeys Marabini, clearly impressed by the youngster’s delivery, offered advice that could help shape Muntu’s career.
“I was watching him perform on stage, and he is very good. My advice, as he hails from Plumtree, is that he should not limit himself to airplay on Plumtree radio stations alone. He must also submit his music to radio stations here in Bulawayo to widen his reach. As young as he is, he is destined for greatness in the near future,” said Jeys.
Throughout the event, Muntu received commendation not only for his artistic prowess but also for the positive example he is setting for his peers.
His commitment to music and decision to perform alongside his age-mates were hailed as a positive step towards steering young people away from drug and substance abuse.
Muntu’s manager and brother, Karan Mbongeni Moyo, expressed his delight at the artiste’s reception, saying the experience had boosted the young performer’s courage and confidence.
“I am happy that Muntu got to perform at such a big event. He has demonstrated that Plumtree is a reservoir of talent. This will undoubtedly inspire others who aspire to walk the same path,” said Karan.
He further revealed that the team is eyeing more shows during the festive season, although Muntu will temporarily step away from the spotlight to focus on his Grade Seven examinations.
“We plan to perform at many more events to come. For now, Muntu will take a well-deserved break as he prepares to sit for his Grade Seven examinations. We shall resume after he has completed them,” he added.
The Maskadi Festive Event proved to be a major platform for the young star and, if the reception he received is anything to go by, Muntu the Living Proof is certainly a name to watch on Zimbabwe’s music scene.
