Chronicle EditorThere is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling for young people than to be able to express themselves openly and without judgment. Young people across Harare comprising mainly students last week celebrated the Global Youth Service Day.
The commemorations were organised by the Zimbabwe United Nations Association under the theme “Youth Symposium on Drugs”.
Global Youth Symposium on Drugs (GYSD), is celebrated each year in more than 135 countries, with young people working together with school students, young people’s organisations, non-profit community and faith-based organisations, national service programmes, Government agencies, and adult mentors, to address the world’s most critical issues and change their communities.
“The Global Youth Service Day was an eye opener for me as I was enlightened by the plenary session on drugs. I learnt about the types of narcotics that the youth abuse on a day to day basis.
“These narcotics are taken such as oral ingestion, inhalation and by injections. Examples of such narcotics include alcohol, cocaine and crystal meth.
“There is need to include relevant stakeholders such as the church, the media, Ministry of Health and Child Care in a bid to eradicate the use of drugs. I also learnt that the main problem why the youth abuse drugs is due to unemployment.
“Drugs destroy creativity and innovation. It is of great importance that every individual be involved in the fight against drugs, as the use of narcotics has paralysed the moral fabric of the society,” said Kumbirai Kuchena, an Ellis Robins student.
The celebrations made a very big impact. The students and the youth learnt a lot about drugs and drug abuse.
The participants were active in the recommendations made on how to curb drug abuse. – CL Reporter.
