school yesterday where they started preparations for the Barbarians’ schools tour.
The British Barbarians schools’ Under-18 side is expected in the country on Friday, a day before they take on the Harare Lions at Prince Edward’s Jubilee Field.
This will be the first time in more than 10 years that a British side will be touring Zimbabwe and the junior side is expected to take on four local sides.
After opening their tour with a date against the Harare provincial side – the Harare Lions coached by Brighton Chivandire – the side will travel to Mashonaland West.
At Lomagundi College, the visitors are expected to take on a Country Districts side featuring players from Mashonaland West and Mashonaland East.
This means players in the Districts side will come from schools like hosts Lomagundi, Chinhoyi High School, Watershed College and Peterhouse among others.
The Districts game will be the only match the tourists will play outside Harare as they are also set to take on Zimbabwe Under-18 in the big one at St Johns College in Harare.
The game has been set for next Wednesday, two days before the Barbarians round off their tour with a game against a Goshawks side at the same venue.
The Goshawks side is expected to start training on Friday at St Johns College, starting at 4pm, and their Sunday training session has been set for 9am at the same venue.
The side will also train three more times – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning – before taking on the visitors in the evening of April 14. St Johns College players are dominating the side as they have provided 10 of the 23 players that have been called-up while St George’s College have the second highest number with four players.
Churchill Boys and Falcon College have three players each, Prince Edward two and Kyle College only have Takudzwa Chieza.
But the Zimbabwe technical side will not field the full strength side as some of the players are over 19 since the British are bringing only their Under-18s.
This means senior players like forwards Takudzwa Mandiwanza, Tatenda Karuru, back liners Charles Jiji, Marco Mama and Takudzwa Jaravaza will miss the game.
The technical team will have a chance to fully test some of the junior players for the Craven Week Under-18 tournament set for early May in South Africa and the JWRT.
Young Sables assistant coach Godwin “Jaws” Murambiwa said his side will get a feel of international rugby before they depart for the JWRT.
