‘Your worship, thou shall not silence me!’

A Chitungwiza woman who was arraigned before the courts for violating a protection order did the unthinkable last week – she verbally abused the complainant in court. Sarudzai Chademoyo of Zengeza in Chitungwiza appeared in court two hours late to answer to charges of violating an earlier order not to verbally insult Rachel Dhambira, her neighbour.

Her explanaton – “I had been summoned by the police to give a statement and that is why I came in late sezvo muchishanda mese ndangoti muri kuzviziva” (Since you work with the police, I assumed you knew l was running late).

The court heard that Chademoyo continued insulting Dhambira despite the protecton order and would at times label her “a witch”.

It is the state’s case that on June 17, 2016; Dhambira reported to the police that as she was closing the gate to her house, Chademoyo appeared and began shouting at her.

During cross examination, Chademoyo interjected, shouting at Dhambira, prompting the presiding officer to intervene.

“…Saka munofunga kuti ndinopenga here inini? Ever since 1981, handisati ndambokutukai ini,(Do you think I am insane? I have never insulted you ever since 1981,” she said in a very loud voice, prompting laughter from the gallery.

But the magistrate, Mr Francis Mapfumo, was not amused.

“Please behave and give others a chance to talk. You just do not jump in court, and if you behave like this, I will put you in cells” he said.

Mr Mapfumo is expected to make a ruling tomorrow.
