A WAVE of compassion swept through Khayelihle Children’s Village last weekend as the Doing Good Projects Trust (DGPT) partnered with the Rotaract Club of United College of Education to host an outreach programme dubbed Valentine’s Visit to the Orphans.

Held on Saturday in the month of February, widely regarded as the month of love, the visit moved beyond the traditional romantic focus associated with Valentine’s Day.

Mr Brilliant Sithole, the founder of DGPT, said the event formed part of their annual programme where they interact with orphans in collaboration with other institutions as an act of love.

“As a non-profit organisation, our aim is to show love and support to these children annually. We believe that true love is focusing on the needy, which means showing them the love that Jesus talks about in the Bible,” he said.

Mr Sithole thanked KCV for allowing the organisation to extend a helping hand to the children.

The initiative centred on demonstrating practical love through service, compassion and generosity to vulnerable children. Speaking during the event, Rotaract Club president Miss Valery Moyo said the organisation was grateful for the opportunity to serve at the children’s home and praised young people for stepping up.

“We are glad that on this occasion the Rotaract Club of United College of Education has chosen to partner with DGPT. These are the kind of youths we cherish in our country’s youths, who know what love is. Whereas everyone is thinking of making a dollar, few are considering how to wisely spend that dollar after getting it,” she said.

The programme coincided with the National Youth Day commemorations, placing young people at the centre of both celebration and responsibility.

Head of the Rotaract Club of United College of Education, Valery Moyo, said the visit reflected the club’s commitment to community service guided by its principle, “Service Above Self”. “It’s truly an honour to stand before you today and as Rotaract club our purpose is to take action through community service.

Our motto reminds us that true service means putting the needs of others before our own and making a positive impact wherever we can,” she said. Moyo further stressed the need for love and guidance for Zimbabwean youths, particularly in the face of growing social challenges.

“As we commemorate National Youth Day, we must acknowledge the challenges facing our young people, especially drug and substance abuse, which continues to destroy lives, dreams and destinies.

What the youth of Zimbabwe need now more than ever is love that protects, guides, corrects and gives hope,” she said. While February is often associated with romantic affection, Miss Moyo emphasised that the day’s activities represented a deeper expression of love rooted in Christian values. As part of the outreach, the Rotaract Club handed over toiletries and care packages to promote hygiene, dignity and self-confidence among the children.

Cleanliness promotes dignity, confidence and self-respect, forming a vital aspect of caring for oneself.

The visit was characterised by warm interactions, smiles and renewed hope among the children and volunteers.

For both DGPT and the Rotaract Club, the initiative reinforced that true love is demonstrated not through words but through acts of service that uplift the vulnerable.

DGPT expressed hope that more youth-led organisations would take up similar humanitarian efforts, demonstrating that when young people lead with compassion, communities are transformed.
