they took practical steps in defending it than just talking about it.
Addressing delegates at a World Federation of Democratic Youth General Assembly in Harare yesterday, Cde Khaya Moyo said developing countries were under attack from Western countries that wanted to recolonise them.
The conference was attended by youths from, among other countries, Venezuela, Vietnam, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Korea, Russia, Cyprus, Brazil and the Sadc region.
The assembly was held under the theme “Youths struggling against imperialism: We chose our own future”.
“You represent not only the majority of our respective populations but the future as well,” Cde Khaya Moyo said.
“The youths have participated in struggles ranging from liberating their people from the shackles of oppression by unashamed imperialists and unrepentant colonialists.
“The youths have demonstrated that their energy, vibrancy and principled stand on issues pertaining to the promotion of true democracy, human dignity and defence of sovereignty, freedom and independence, defines them as impeccable revolutionaries.”
The youths, Cde Khaya Moyo said, were not paper tigers because they bite if imperialists want to re-colonise their countries.
He said the youths stood their ground on matters of principle.
“We admire your courage, your steadfastness, your solidarity, your clarity of vision and your uncompromising rejection of pseudo-democracy as championed by Western powers.
“You have refused re-colonisation. You have rejected puppetry so admired by sellouts among our midst, who claim leadership which is remote-controlled by their paymasters in the West,” Cde Khaya Moyo said.
He said the youths were supposed to take the lead in revolutionary efforts meant to reverse the colonial injustices that former colonies are still subjected to.
WFDY president Mr Palymris Dimitris said imperialists were preoccupied with war.
“We saw the continuation of occupations in many countries the same time that the occupying states are supported by their allies in the imperial pack.
“Most importantly, we saw the so-called promise of a peaceful world to mean nothing less than the right of imperialists to directly attack with the force of the arms any country they believe is a threat for their profit making and their routes to the market,” said Mr Dimitris, who is from Cyprus.
He said the imperialists’ hunger for more profit leads them to attack those countries where they can make profit.
Zanu-PF secretary for Youth Affairs Cde Absolom Sikhosana said world peace and security was under threat from imperialist forces due to their arbitrary interventions, which left many countries ravaged.
“Today, the world is characterised by an environment full of tension, violence, wars, gross injustice and total disrespect for human rights by Western imperialist powers which are plundering the resources of developing countries,” he said.
ANC youth league deputy president Cde Ronald Lamola said it was the mandate of the youths to pursue the African vision of political and economic independence.
“As the youths we have to fight against imperialism and we are not going to surrender until we have achieved economic freedom.
“We have to be radical and militant as the youths who liberated our countries from colonialism.
“The elders have accepted that the whites are richer than blacks, but we are not going to allow that. We want to reverse that, we cannot have one white man richer than all blacks in the whole continent,” Cde Lamola said.
He said the African continent will not be recolonised under the watchful eye of the youths.
