YOUTH empowerment programmes being spearheaded by Government seek to ensure young people move from job hunting to self-employment, production and participating in the economic development of the country.
Speaking at the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) annual pilgrimage in Gokwe yesterday, Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire said young people must take up empowerment programmes and contribute to economic growth and development.
Minister Machakaire was representing President Mnangagwa at the occasion.
The pilgrimage also coincided with the church’s 50th Golden Jubilee.
Minister Machakaire presented certificates to 450 youths who graduated in various disciplines, including carpentry, bricklaying, catering and horticulture, among others.
He said Government would continue working with various communities, including churches, to ensure no one and no place is left behind in the empowerment drive.
“ Government will continue to work with churches across the country to empower youths,” Minister Machakaire said.
“We want to thank you, the church, for being our moral compass, for fostering peace and unity in our communities.
“These programmes are meant to move us from job seeking to productivity and self-employment.”
The Minister said the Government would continue to ensure that young people receive adequate support through various programmes.
“The youth should be empowered to ensure the skills acquired from such programmes are used to develop the country,” he added.
“The best graduating students from this programme will receive start-up kits.
“However, as Government, we will continue to ensure that the empowerment bank continues to support the youth.”
The ZCC congregation also received a shot in the arm from the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, who donated 4 000 chicks and 7 000 bags of seed.
Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi, who handed over the donation, said it was meant to empower youths and women.

He lauded Dr Mnangagwa for promoting women and girls through programmes such as Nhanga/ Gota as well as various other initiatives.
Gokwe South Member of Parliament and National Housing and Social Amenities Minister Professor Paul Mavima commended the annual pilgrimages, saying they ensured continued development and helped ensure that no place and no one was left behind.
“Our community is transformed economically and spiritually every year due to your community,” he said.
“We have witnessed the construction of a dam near this place, and in addition, we are constructing a bridge which will connect this place to various nearby communities as well as the country.
“We are therefore grateful for this annual gathering.”
The event was attended by various Government officials and ZCC congregants from across the world.
