As new technologies continue to emerge and develop, companies and organisations have to be flexible and able to keep abreast.
Creativity and innovation allows them to easily identify new ways in which technology can be applied to help the growth and security of their day-to-day operations.
Zimbabwe youths from various provinces shared their thoughts on the importance of celebrating World Day of Creativity and Innovation to the nation.
“As a young innovator, cultivating your creativity should be one of your top priorities. Creativity is the spark that ignites new ideas, inspires passion and drives the progress within ourselves.
“It is one of the most uniquely human abilities we have as youngsters,” said Bennett Mhlanga, a University of Zimbabwe computer science student.
Mhlanga said that the world’s future belongs to creators, innovators and visionaries as advanced technology helps to amplify human creativity since it is the source of people’s progress and purpose.
World Creativity and Innovation Day is a global United Nations day celebrated on 21 April every year to raise awareness around the importance of creativity and innovation in problem solving with respect to advancing the United Nations sustainable development goals known as global goals.
This year’s celebrations were running under the theme “Step Out and Innovate.”
According to United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) statistics the day has been observed by citizens, companies and organisations in over 50 countries since the year 2002.
The purpose and objective of the day is to encourage creative multidisciplinary thinking at the individual and group levels which according to a special report on the creative economy by UNESCO has become the true wealth of nations in the 21st century.
“Creativity is one of the most important skills one can nurture as a young innovator.
“Creativity thinking means embracing yourself, your interests and thinking outside the box which leads to unveiling solutions to a general problem in a society. Therefore, it takes practice and effort in thinking”, Brian Makanjira, a young innovator added.
Creativity allows the general public to view things and solve problems more openly with an aspect of innovation. It broadens people’s perspectives which will result in overcoming prejudices.
The day is also of great importance in applying creativity in the arts sector as it contributes to the nation’s culture.
“Importance of commemorating World creativity and innovation day in the arts sector clearly reflects the sense of appreciation for all content creators and that alone contributes to their growth”, said Tinevimbo Eugean Matsutsururu, young female radio presenter.
She further urged the society to set platforms which support the growth of content creators in the arts industry through establishing music and drama colleges which will help them to achieve greatness for the nation.
Culture remains an essential component of sustainable development and represents a source of identity, innovation and creativity for individuals as well as the community at large.
