Youths urged to celebrate Independence

Manicaland Correspondent
Youths must have a culture of celebrating the Independence Day, a war veterans leader in Manicaland has said.

Cde Gift Kagweda said people should not forget what the gallant sons and daughters of the country went through to attain the country’s liberation.

He said Independence Day celebrations should be embraced by every citizen as they reflect on the unity of purpose exhibited during the war of liberation struggle.

“As war veterans, we are saying the 18th of April is the day we got Zimbabwean independence following the loss of many lives,” he said.

“This is a day which every citizen is supposed to respect on our national calendar. Young people should be taught the values derived from blood that was lost and the suffering experienced by those who participated in the struggle.

“Once we fail to celebrate the Independence Day, it means we have lost the essence and value of the liberation struggle as Zimbabweans.”

Cde Kagweda said celebrating independence shows how the nation values attaining our freedom from the colonial rule.

He urged people to celebrate peacefully.

“We are encouraging members of the public to participate in the celebrations peacefully,” he said.

“I also urge people to come out in their numbers to attend the celebrations at various points across the province.”

Provincial Independence Day celebrations are held at Sakubva Stadium in Mutare where the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs reads the President’s speech on his behalf.

The celebrations are also coupled with various entertainment activities with police and army displays.
