THE young generation has been challenged to shoulder the burden of developing their country, emulating their fore-bearers who liberated it and driving the developmental agenda, former Harare South National Assembly member Cde Shadreck Mashayamombe has said.

Speaking at an interactive meeting with the youth on the importance of Independence Day celebrations yesterday morning, Cde Mashayamombe said it is high time the young generation cherish and appreciate the role played by forefathers to liberate Zimbabwe.

“It is high time we look back in honour of our founding fathers and many brave and fearless young people who sacrificed their youth and schooling to wage the protracted liberation war.

“We must never forget their supreme sacrifices. On the other hand, we look forward to the future with great confidence, guided by the philosophy and mantra of President Mnangagwa “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo,” said Cde Mashayamombe.

He urged youths to refrain from drug and substance abuse, remain vigilant and defend the country from its detractors.

“We are strengthened by the strides our nation continues to make. Even though sanctions were imposed on our country, we are marching forward.

“A country cannot be led by drug lords, the young generation must refrain from drug abuse,” he said.

The Second Republic led by President Mnangagwa is working towards achieving Vision 2030, which seeks to fundamentally transform Zimbabwe to an empowered upper-middle income economy.

The nation has great targets to achieve, aspirations to realise and a national vision to attain

This year’s main Independence celebrations will be held at Murambinda Growth Point in Manicaland province.

The Independence theme: “Zim@44: Unity, Peace and Development Towards Vision 2030” resonates with the aspirations of the whole nation

“Independence Day celebrations are very important, especially to young Zimbabweans who are enjoying the fruits of the liberation struggle.  As the young generation, we want to thank the President and the entire leadership of the party for taking the Independence celebrations to the rural area of Buhera at Murambinda Growth Point. The independence celebrations shape our past, present and future. It is important for the youths to understand our history and pass on the baton to the next generation,” said Cde Mashayamombe.

He called on the nation to grow the economy by engaging in various projects.

“Focus should be on economic independence, we must produce, and the private sector should complement Government efforts to grow the economy. We must be an industrialised country. We should support Government policies,” emphasised Cde Mashayamombe.
