Zaka District has the highest number of sexual gender – based violence cases in Masvingo province.

According to statistics from the National Aids Council (NAC), one in every three women is a survivor of sexual gender-based violence in the district.

This represents around 33 percent of all women in Zaka.

NAC’s acting Masvingo provincial manager, Mr Munorwei Munyikwa, told a media training workshop that journalists are key change agents in combating the sexual gender-based violence scourge that is also closely linked to the spread of HIV and Aids.

He said his organisation has since rolled out the Start Awareness Start Action (SASA) programme to help stem sexual and gender-based violence in Zaka.

The high prevalence of sexual gender-based violence in Zaka is militating against efforts to fight the HIV and Aids pandemic in the district.

Mr Munyikwa urged the media to uphold ethics and report objectively and factually to add impetus to the fight against sexual and gender-based violence.

Survivors of sexual and gender-based violence were also supposed to seek immediate health assistance after being violated.
