THE Zambezi Eagles, Zimbabwe’s national netball side, have returned home from a spirited campaign in South Africa’s prestigious Telkom Netball League with pride, lessons, and a giant scalp in their bag.
The Eagles lit up the courts during the week-long tournament held in South Africa’s North West Province, delivering a thrilling upset when they defeated defending champions Free State Crinums 57–49. Zambezi Eagles technical director John Banda hailed the team’s fighting spirit and discipline, describing the win as a statement that Zimbabwean netball deserves respect on the continental stage.
“This was the biggest achievement, we won that game, and the girls gave it everything. By the first quarter, we were already leading 21–5 against such a top side,” said Banda.

While the Eagles lost three of their matches, they managed to win four, including the stunning victory over the Crinums.
Banda was full of praise for the players, who he said exceeded expectations despite the odds.
“Imagine facing South Africa’s top teams, who have better facilities, are fitter, and far more experienced, but our girls rose to the challenge and matched them,” he said.
The Eagles’ victories were powered by stand-out individual performances, with several players earning Player of the Match honours and walking away with R1 000 prizes.
Lesibani Munjanji-Karis was the first to be recognised, followed by Thandazile Ndlovu, while Nicole Muzanenhamo was named Player of the Match twice, a testament to her consistency and class.
Banda also highlighted how the tournament formed a key part of their long-term strategy leading to the 2027 Netball World Cup.
“In order for us to qualify for Australia, we came up with initiatives to expose our players to high-level competition. The Telkom Netball League was exactly what we needed,” he said.
He said that thorough preparations remain crucial, including their upcoming participation in an invitational series in Scotland.
This, Banda said, will help fine-tune the squad ahead of the Africa qualifiers, especially as some senior players may not be part of the 2027 journey due to age or declining performance.
He also thanked long-time sponsor Nedbank for their continued support of Zimbabwean netball, calling it vital for the team’s ongoing development.
