A delegation from the Zambian Road Agency which is in the country on a road administration study tour, yesterday visited the Goromonzi toll plaza along Mutare Road where it hailed the country’s tolling system. The team, which is led by Engineer Steven Mwale (director commercial and technical services), is being hosted by the Zimbabwe National Road Administration.
Eng Mwale told The Herald after the tour that Zimbabwe’s tolling system was a model in the region and they would soon implement the same in Zambia.
Zimbabwe has nine toll plazas along the Plumtree-Mutare Highway, which are solar powered and has many more scattered on different routes across the country.
“We have heard a lot about what has been done here, about road tolling and construction of roads using toll fees and, we have been following that with keen interest,” said Eng Mwale.
Eng Mwale said it was important to account for toll fees by way of ploughing the money back in road construction.
In Zambia, Eng Mwale said, they were still using weigh bridges for tolling and efforts were underway to start the construction of state-of-the-art toll gates.
