Zambia suspends driving exams

LUSAKA. — Authorities in Zambia have suspended written examinations for those seeking to obtain drivers’ licences due to a low pass rate, the Post of Zambia reported yesterday. The written examinations were introduced recently as part of the requirement for one to get a driver’s licence to curb rampant corruption.

But Road Transport and Safety Agency chief executive officer Zindaba Soko said the written examination has been put on hold because of the poor pass rate recorded in the last one month the examination had been administered in which the pass rate averaged 25 percent.

The pass mark for the written examination had been set at 75 percent.
“We are revising them and actually for now, they are on hold because the pass rate is low because the questions are a bit more technical.

“Those questions would serve well for those who are already driving and they want to upgrade to a higher grade of the licence,” he was quoted as saying by the paper.

According to him, the written examinations were being examined to make them more user-friendly even for those who can’t read or write English.

Previously, people were only required to go for an oral question and answer session and then proceed to a physical driving test in order to get a driver’s licence, but the system was fraught with corruption.
