ZAMBIA has reaffirmed its commitment to continue improving its warm relations with Zimbabwe following the re-election of President Mugabe at a time when the two countries are co-hosting the United Nations World Tourism general assembly which is a testimony of the growing bond.
Addressing delegates at the official opening of the event in Victoria Falls last night, Zambian President Michael Sata also congratulated President Mugabe on wining this year’s harmonsied election adding that this was sign of the trust and confidence people in Zimbabwe have in him.
“I want to congratulate President Mugabe on his re-election as the President of Zimbabwe, your victory shows the trust and confidence people of Zimbabwe have in you,” he said.
“I am happy. Cde Mugabe, without Mai Grace Mugabe and Mai Mujuru what we see today would have been impossible. A great man must have great women around him and you are lucky to have these two women.”
Africa, said President Sata must take a leaf from Zimbabwe and Zambia who have managed to host such important events.
‘I look forward to the regions in Africa that have not done (hosting major events) to also do that in future.
President Sata said tourism had the potential to transform Africa and its people hence the need to put more effort to ensure that people at community level benefit from the sector.
He said the hosting of the UNWTO by Zambia and Zimbabwe must spur Africa to fully exploit the potential of tourism.
President Sata said there was need to increase support for tourism that promotes ecosystems and the environment. He thanked the
UNWTO for showing the confidence in Zambia and Zimbabwe to host such a big event adding that at the end of the general assembly the two countries must be proud of what they would have achieved.
“Of course we are siamese twins but he (President Mugabe) is the older one and now I hand over to him,” said President Sata to applause from delegates.
