Gospel singer Zanele Ngwenya is enjoying a breakthrough moment with her latest album, Uphakamisa Izinga, which has climbed to the number one spot on the Skyz Metro FM Gospel Chart.
The 46-year-old singer, hailing from Mtshabezi village in Gwanda, has long been spreading the message of God’s love through her music.
She revealed that her new album draws inspiration from the biblical story of Esther, aiming to convey messages of hope, faith, and purpose.
“Through my music, I want to inspire others to follow their calling and trust in God’s plan.”
Growing up in a musical family, Zanele began singing in primary school, performing alongside her late sister and mother both at home and in church. Her passion and talent led her to join the praise and worship team at Brethren in Christ Church.
“My musical journey was influenced by my family and church. I would often sing, preach, and pray for people, and God would speak to me in my dreams, envisioning me singing and preaching in large stadiums. After marrying Bongani Ngwenya in 2000, I continued pursuing my passion, singing with my husband and friends in Bulawayo,” said Zanele.
Her former teacher, Rev Mbongeni, recognised her talent and encouraged her to record her songs. With her husband’s musical expertise, Zanele released her first album, Siyaphambili Ngevangeli, followed by her second album, Uphakamisa Izinga, which features 14 tracks.
“My music is inspired by gospel artistes like Mechanic Manyeruke, Brian Sibalo, and South African musicians such as Deric Ndzimande and Andile Majola. I enjoy worshiping God and exploring different gospel styles.
“My sound blends traditional and contemporary gospel, shaped greatly by my family. My brother, Pastor Ndabezihle Nyathi, founded Mazikhelela Brethren in Christ Church, where I often sang. Sadly, I lost my sister Siphatisiwe, with whom I used to sing,” she said.
