IT was all smiles for parents of more than 20 less privileged learners at Hugh Beadle Primary School in Bulawayo’s Sauerstown suburb as they received school uniforms for their children donated by Zanu-PF candidate for Ward 2 Cde Bonginkosi Moyo.
Parents of the learners who benefitted live in illegal settlements in Trenance and could not afford to buy uniforms for their children.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Sanele Ndlovu, could not hide tears of joy as she received the uniform for one of her grandchildren.
“I am the one who is responsible for taking care of my granddaughter after her mother abandoned her when she was still young. I had to raise the girl despite struggling to make ends meet since I am a pensioner,” she said.
Ms Sharon Nyeve, a single mother to a Grade Three kid who benefited from the donation, said it warms her heart to know that her child will no longer attend school lessons with a torn uniform.
“My daughter walks long distances to and from school, which sometimes worries me because I fear that she might fall prey to some cunning men along the way. So, today l know l will be at peace knowing that she will be wearing a decent uniform,” she said.
Another parent, Mr Idris Kasongo, said he managed to get two uniforms for his children who are in different grades.
He said as a father it didn’t go down well with her to see his children going to school without proper uniforms.
Mr Kasongo said for that reason he appreciates the donation from the aspiring councillor.
“When the school called me telling me l should come and collect the uniforms l thought it was a joke. I am thankful to Cde Moyo for the gesture which came at the right time,” he said.
Cde Moyo said: “I am actually helping the girl child mostly because of the struggles that they go through. Most of them are from poor backgrounds, and my dream is to make sure that no girl child goes to school without a proper uniform.”
Last month, the aspiring councillor donated uniforms to over 50 female learners at Trenance Primary School.
