Zanu-PF says there is nothing amiss with President Mugabe’s daughter, Bona, accompanying the Head of State on his foreign business trips as there is no domestic or international law that prohibts leaders from travelling with their children. The ruling party’s deputy director for information Cde Psychology Maziwisa yesterday said in a statement those taking exception to the development were clueless about happenings in the global political sphere.
He was responding to a barrage of negative reports in the private media after Bona was included in President Mugabe’s delegation to Japan for the United Nations 3rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.
The private media and the MDC-T led by Morgan Tsvangirai claimed President Mugabe had taken Bona with him because he “could not entirely depend on his security team because of ill health.”
Cde Maziwisa described as “pettiness” the hullabaloo by the country’s retrogressive elements.
“While we do not expect (Morgan) Tsvangirai to know this from personal experience because he has never been a Head of State himself and is unlikely ever to become one in his lifetime, at least we reasonably expect that he should be acquainted with these basic facts because they are a matter of public record,” he said.
“It’s really not too much to ask from someone who has a well-known dream of one day becoming Zimbabwe’s Head of State.”
He said former United States President Bill Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea, attended incalculable State meetings and functions with her father and no one made it an issue.
“She (Chelsea) in fact, when her mother was away campaigning, became the focal point at the White House where she received several foreign dignitaries,” Cde Maziwisa said.
“Madam Bona Mugabe has not done anything nearly as much. We refuse to buy into the narrative that for as long as it is President Mugabe doing it, no matter how perfectly lawful it is, it is wrong, but if it is Bill Clinton doing it, it is cool. It is a barbaric way of doing politics.”
Tsvangirai, he said, should mind his miserable political career which was “drawing to an unhappy end.”
“At least President Mugabe is travelling abroad with his daughter,” Cde Maziwisa said.
“Tsvangirai has travelled on innumerable foreign missions with concubines, most of whom are young enough to be his daughters. If he sees glory in that, then shame on him.”
Added Mr Maziwisa:
“He needs to shut up and concentrate on sharpening his leadership skills. Make no mistake, we are not at all perturbed by this. As far as we are concerned, chimpanzees scream, dogs bark and Morgan Tsvangirai talks nonsense.”
