Zanu PF says it is determined to win the Chegutu urban ward 2 seat in the by-election set for today so that it can implement development projects that the previous councillor failed to do.
The ruling party is being represented by Cde Prosper Mtongerwa. The by-election election follows the death of Memory Banda of the MDC-Alliance late last year.
Addressing Ward 2 residents in Chegutu over the weekend, Zanu PF Politburo member Cde Edna Madzongwe said the party was ready to take over the seat.
“Our vision is to turnaround the economy and ensure development that the previous councillor failed to provide,” she said.
“If we have unity of purpose, we can bring development to the ward and to Chegutu as a whole.”
Cde Madzongwe said Zanu PF has the people at heart and wants to deliver water to the people, hence the drilling of a borehole in the ward.
Zanu PF Central Committee member Cde Webster Shamu called on the electorate to set aside their differences and vote for the party’s candidate.
“Zanu PF has a record of winning. If we are divided as a party, we can only set the path for the enemy. We need to set aside all our differences and be guided by the constitution. That way we can be victorious,” he said.
Mr Mtongerwa is the Zanu PF political commissar for Dzikamidzi district and chairperson of Chegutu Business Development Association.
He has worked for the Ministry of Local Government, and was previously a prison officer responsible for the technical section.
Cde Mtongerwa is also chairperson of the Business against Crime Forum of Zimbabwe, Mashonaland West Province and Chegutu Pirates FC vice chairman.
