ZANU PF Harare province is encouraging  its members to accept and use the new ZiG currency and wants all other parties to do the same.

Speaking soon after meeting Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Dr John Mushayavanhu yesterday, Zanu PF Harare provincial secretary for economic affairs Dr Blessing Chimanga, who was leading the delegation, said Zimbabweans should exhibit high levels of patriotism by embracing the new currency.

“We met the RBZ Governor to get clarification on how the general public can have confidence in the new currency. He called upon Zimbabweans to be patriotic and have confidence in their currency,” said Dr Chimanga, who is also a banker by profession.

In embracing the ZiG, Dr Chimanga said Zimbabweans are not just accepting a new form of currency, but will be reiterating their commitment to the ideals of independence and the ongoing quest for a prosperous, self-sufficient nation.

“Those abusing the new currency, do not deserve to be walking freely in the streets or anywhere in Zimbabwe. Those people who are manipulating the currency for their benefit should face the full wrath of the law. As Zimbabweans, we should be identified with our currency like what is happening in other countries. We can’t be a country without its identity,” said Dr Chimanga.

Dr Chimanga said Harare province will have a meeting tomorrow on how they can educate the general people on the importance of using local currency.

“We are going to make sure we educate our party supporters from cell-level to provincial structures to understand the strength of our local currency, where is it coming from and where is it going. ZiG is not going to be like the previous local currency. We are going to have awareness campaigns. We are calling our members, not only from the economic clusters, but all the top party leadership to cascade the correct information to the grassroots,”  he said.

He urged retail shops to set prices of goods according to the official bank rate to avoid inflating prices at the expense of the consumers.

“There is no need to be hostile to your own country. Zimbabwe is the country you identify yourself with. Let us be patriotic. We remain Zimbabweans. Harare, is the financial hub of Zimbabwe; hence we will not tolerate any transgressions,” he said.

His deputy Cde Nathan Fundukwa said political parties must educate their members on the new currency.

“As Zanu PF Harare province, we are going to educate our party structures to have confidence in ZiG. ZiG is the only solution.  Those who want to manipulate our currency should be arrested,” said Cde Fundukwa.

The Ministry of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services has already come up with a communication plan to aid the Reserve Bank in raising awareness of the new gold-backed ZiG currency introduced last month.
