ZANU PF Harare province is confident of upstaging the opposition CCC in Mabvuku-Tafara by-election slated for December 9.
The party yesterday convened a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting ahead of its campaign launch.
The PCC meeting was attended by Politburo, Central Committee, National Consultative Assembly and provincial executive members, among others.
It was chaired by Zanu PF Harare provincial vice chair Cde Ephraim Fundukwa who said the party will do everything possible to win back the seat.
“We want to ensure the party candidate Cde Scott Sakupwanya wins the seat for Zanu PF. We have set up campaign teams and we will not rest until we win back the seat.
“We will campaign orderly in line with President Mnangagwa’s clarion call for peace.
‘‘President Mnangagwa is on record calling for peaceful elections. We are confident that we will win the seat for the party,” said Cde Fundukwa.
Politburo member and Zanu PF Secretary for Education, Research and Ideology Cde Charles Tavengwa said: “The meeting was meant to consult the structures of the party to map the way forward ahead of Mabvuku by-election.
“We have to agree on the approaches for Mabvuku-Tafara constituency. It’s a different terrain all together. Yes, we have been there before, but we have to see were we fall short, correct ourselves and make sure that when we go there as a team, we are there to fulfil the aspirations of those people in that area, it’s not our wish but we have to fulfil their wishes,” said Cde Tavengwa.
Cde Tavengwa expressed optimism that the revolutionary party would snatch the seat from CCC.
“Nobody goes into a war to lose. Nobody goes into a struggle to lose. We are going there to win and that is our target,”said Cde Tavengwa.
Provincial Political Commissar Cde Kudakwashe Damson said the party would deploy adequate resources in Mabvuku-Tafara to unsettle the opposition party.
“We have set targets for the Mabvuku-Tafara seat, which is a resounding victory for the party,” said Cde Damson.
By-elections in Mabvuku and 13 other constituencies were necessitated by the recalling of 14 CCC members of the National Assembly and nine Senators by the opposition party’s interim secretary-general Mr Sengezo Tshabangu last month.
Subsequently, President Mnangagwa proclaimed December 9 as the date for the by-elections in terms of the Electoral Act.
Apart from Mabvuku, National Assembly by-elections now have to be held in Cowdray Park, Mpopoma-Mzilikazi, Lobengula-Magwegwe, Lupane East, Bulawayo South, Nketa and Binga North.
