The ruling party, Zanu-PF, yesterday sent a condolence message to families of people who died due to Cyclone Idai, and commended President Mnangagwa for declaring the crisis a State of Disaster.
The cyclone has so far claimed at least 70 lives, with more people missing in Chimanimani district where it hit the hardest. It has also destroyed infrastructure such as bridges, roads, schools, shops and clinics, and swept away crops and livestock.
In a statement, Zanu-PF national spokesperson Cde Simon Khaya Moyo said the party also sympathised with Mozambique and Malawi which were also devastated by the cyclone .
“On behalf of the Zanu-PF President and First Secretary His Excellency Cde E.D. Mnangagwa and the entire Zanu-PF family, I wish to extent deepest sympathy with those whose loved ones perished in this national catastrophe or were injured, missing or affected in one way or the other,” he said.
“Indeed, deepest thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved and the nation in general as we mourn the departed. May their souls rest in eternal peace. The party also wishes those injured a speedy recovery.
“Zanu-PF is exceedingly grateful and takes solace in His Excellency the President and the Government for declaring the effects of Cyclone Idai a national disaster, hence elevating Government support to the affected areas.”
Cde Khaya Moyo also sympathised with Malawi and Mozambique.
“Deepest sympathy is also extended to our sister ruling parties of Frelimo in Mozambique and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Malawi for the miserable losses of their countrymen as a result of the unkind Cyclone Idai,” he said.
