The second edition of the Zanu-PF Provincial Youth Games, held as part of Munhumutapa Day and celebrations to mark President Mnangagwa’s birthday, was successfully held at the University of Zimbabwe at the weekend.
The games brought together scores of young people from across the province for sporting activities and celebrations ahead of President Mnangagwa’s birthday tomorrow.
Games chairman and Zanu-PF Provincial Youth Deputy Secretary for Mines and Energy Councillor Tarusenga Mushininga, said he was pleased by the high turnout.
Cde Mushininga said the large numbers demonstrated the enthusiasm among youths to participate in sporting activities while celebrating the President’s birthday.
“I am very happy with the number of youths from Zone 1 to Zone 6 who have made these games a success,” he said.
“We also had various educational institutions participating. I want to wish President Mnangagwa a happy birthday.
“This has been a great way to celebrate our leader’s birthday, and we would like him to continue to lead us to 2030 and beyond.”
Harare Province Youth League chairperson, Cde Emmanuel Mahachi, said the games were also being used to fight against drug and substance abuse among youths, through various sporting activities that target different groups.
“We are grateful the youths have turned up for these games that we are using to educate them about the dangers of drug and substance abuse,” he said.
Cde Mahachi said the variety of sporting disciplines were reflective of President Mnangagwa’s mantra of, “Leaving No One and No Place Behind”.
“What I have witnessed here was amazing. There were sports like korfball, handball, volleyball, basketball, netball and football, showing that we catered for all genders and everyone within our youth demographic.”
BoysDzaMdara national spokesperson, Cde Tawanda Shanya, said the games were also being used to promote the talents within the participants.
“We are grateful that through this event we can be able to see the talents within our youths which we can nurture and develop as a party,” he said.
He also thanked President Mnangagwa for spearheading youth empowerment in various sectors such as agriculture, financial services and mining sectors, among others.
Some of the winners included Kuwadzana Kings in the men’s basketball, Falcons in women’s basketball, Women’s University of Africa in men’s football, Belvedere Teachers College in women’s football, Harare Polytechnic in the netball category, while UZ Boys dzaMdara chapter won men’s volleyball and the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) College won the women’s category.
After the games, the youths were entertained by Zimdancehall artist Boss Pumacol.
