Zanu-PF thwarts bid to restore Bill

Security Amendment Bill be restored on the Order Paper for resumption of debate.
The restoration of the Bill would have allowed resumption of debate after it had initially lapsed following the end of the last session. Debate on the Bill had also been stalled after Justice and Legal Affairs Minister

Patrick Chinamasa had accused Mr Gonose of bringing issues that were before negotiators to the Global Political Agreement.
Yesterday Zanu-PF senators took turns to oppose efforts by Mr Gonese to restore the motion. They argued that senators should wait to have the issues addressed by the principals and negotiators to the GPA.

The senators said Mr Gonese had not advanced any reasons warranting discussion of the amendments. Rushinga Senator, Damien Mumvuri (Zanu-PF) said it was important to wait until negotiators have dealt with it.
“This is a sensitive Bill, it has to be dealt with by our principals and negotiators first. The mover has not explained what has stalled progress, we better shelve it, we cannot accept the reinstatement of the Bill,” said Sen Mumvuri.

Mount Darwin Senator, Alice Chimbudzi (Zanu-PF) castigated MDC-T Senators for calling legislators from Zanu-PF cowards.
“It’s wrong to say we are cowards. It is the first time we have debated a Private Member’s Bill,” she said.

Senate President Cde Edna Madzongwe adjourned debate after Mr Gonese had moved for its adjournment.
Zanu-PF senators led by Beitbridge Senator Tambudzai Mohadi, had called for the division of the House that would have seen legislators voting to decide on the matter.

Earlier, Mr Gonese had said his motion moving was merely procedural, adding that it was important that legislators be afforded an opportunity to air their views on it.
After a protracted debate, Mr Gonese then moved for adjournment of the motion saying he would resume when Minister Chinamasa who is in Geneva returns.
