Zanu – PF UK leadership, ministers map out Diaspora role in national development

ZANU – PF’s United Kingdom District held a high-level strategic meeting with Presidential Special Advisor, Cde Jorum Gumbo and Deputy Mines and Mining Development Minister, Cde Polite Kambamura on Thursday, reinforcing the ruling party’s push to integrate diaspora expertise and resources into national development programmes.

The engagement, held with senior Government officials, Zanu-PF UK District chair Cde Xavier Zavare, and party members, centred on expanding diaspora participation in monitoring and implementing government projects under Vision 2030.

Ministers Gumbo and Kambamura briefed the structure on key resolutions of the 22nd Annual National People’s Conference and emerging priorities under the forthcoming National Development Strategy 2.

They emphasised areas where diasporans can contribute directly, including project identification, resource mobilisation and innovative crowdfunding models to complement Government efforts.

Cde Zavare presented several strategic proposals, chief among them the creation of a dedicated Diaspora Ministry or Directorate to enhance representation of Zimbabweans abroad. He argued that the growing economic impact of the diaspora, now a critical national constituency, justifies strengthened institutional support.

The meeting also examined the possibility of introducing Diaspora Bonds, a Government-backed investment instrument to channel diaspora capital into national infrastructure and development projects.

Officials noted the concept would provide Zimbabwe with structured funding while offering citizens abroad secure investment opportunities tied to the country’s progress.

Minister Gumbo underscored the diaspora’s rising significance, revealing that Zimbabwe received US$2.7 billion in remittances in 2024, with the UK contributing US$100 million, surpassing South Africa for the first time.

He commended the UK District for its discipline and patriotism.

Sector-specific submissions were also raised, with Youth Affairs Secretary, Cde Farai Nyakudya, appealing for mine claims and land allocations to empower diaspora youths. Women’s League chair Cde Winnie Chimwaza, called for empowerment funds targeting women and young people abroad.

Cde Zavare closed the meeting by pledging unwavering support for President Mnangagwa’s development agenda and reaffirming the District’s commitment to mobilising resources, strengthening party structures and deepening diaspora engagement in national transformation.
