NEWLY-ELECTED Member of Parliament for Nkulumane constituency, Cde Freedom Murechu, took his oath of office at Parliament Building in Harare on Tuesday, marking a new political era for a constituency traditionally viewed as an opposition stronghold.
Cde Murechu took his oath before the Clerk of Parliament, Mr Kennedy Chokuda, during a full session of the House.
The legislator, who contested on a Zanu-PF ticket, secured a resounding victory in the by-election held on December 20 last year. The seat fell vacant following the tragic passing of the incumbent Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator, Mr Desire Moyo, in October.

In a decisive electoral performance, Cde Murechu outpolled eight other candidates to clinch the seat. His commanding margin of 3 416 votes has been described by political observers as a significant shift in the city’s body politic, signaling the electorate’s growing confidence in the Second Republic’s development-oriented policies.
Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, Cde Murechu expressed his profound gratitude to the people of Nkulumane, describing the day as a turning point for the urban constituency.
He noted that his primary mission is to align the constituency with the Second Republic’s developmental trajectory.
“I am deeply humbled by this opportunity to serve. This is not just a personal victory, but the beginning of a new chapter for Nkulumane. For too long, our constituency has lagged behind, but today we start the journey of bringing tangible development and ensuring that we leave no one and no place behind,” said Cde Murechu.
He pledged to hit the ground running, with a focus on improving social amenities and supporting local empowerment projects.
“We are now moving away from the politics of rhetoric to the politics of production. My office will be open to all residents as we work together to implement projects that resonate with His Excellency President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030,” he added.
