ZIMBABWE Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani says the Chevrons’ success at the ICC T20 World Cup was a powerful demonstration of what the sport can achieve.
He was speaking at ZC’s AGM where delegates reflected on Zimbabwe’s finest campaign at the World Cup.
Victories over Australia and co-hosts Sri Lanka propelled the team into the Super Eight stage for the first time. The performance also secured automatic qualification for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 in Australia and New Zealand.
“It was a powerful demonstration of what Zimbabwean cricket can achieve through proper planning, investment, belief and collective purpose,” Mukuhlani said.
He said his leadership will focus on consolidating the progress which the game has made will also ensuring the sport remains sustainable.
Mukuhlani and his leadership have been praised by the ZC stakeholders for the increase in international fixtures for the country’s national teams.
The ZC delegates met in Harare on Saturday for the organisation’s AGM.
The AGM was held under the shadow of the death of the late ZC vice-chairman, Sylvester Matshaka, who died this year after serving on the Board from 2006.
He was vice-chairman from 2015.
A minute of silence was observed during the AGM.
“Our task is to make the progress of this period sustainable – stronger national teams, a broader player base, world-class facilities, deeper commercial partnerships, responsible financial management and a ZC that commands respect both at home and internationally,” said Mukuhlani.
“The foundations are being laid and our responsibility now is to build upon them.”
Delegates representing all 10 of ZC’s provincial affiliates expressed satisfaction with the volume and quality of international cricket secured during the period under review.
The Zimbabwe’s men’s and women’s teams are enjoying an increasingly busy programme across formats.
The Chevrons played an unprecedented 10 Test matches during the 2025 calendar year, facing Afghanistan, Ireland, Bangladesh, England, South Africa and New Zealand.
Among the highlights was Zimbabwe’s return to England for a Test at Trent Bridge in May 2025 – the country’s first bilateral engagement there in 22 years.
Mukuhlani said the expanded programme reflected the organisation’s determination to secure regular and meaningful international competition for Zimbabwe.
“This was deliberate,” he said.
“ZC firmly believes that Full Member status must come with meaningful opportunities to participate in all three formats of international cricket.
“Test cricket remains fundamental to the traditions and future of the game and we will continue advocating for regular fixtures against the leading nations and for a clear pathway for Zimbabwe into the ICC World Test Championship.”
The international schedule has remained busy in 2026.
Bangladesh visited Zimbabwe for a full tour in July, with matches staged in Harare and Bulawayo.
Zimbabwe claimed a record victory by an innings and 85 runs in the Test before going on to win the three-match One-Day International series 2-1.
India subsequently toured Harare for a three-match T20 International series, while Zimbabwe also travelled to Windhoek for a T20I tri-series involving hosts Namibia and South Africa.
Australia are now in Zimbabwe for a three-match ODI series.
The women’s international programme has also expanded significantly, with Zimbabwe Women making their historic debut in the ICC Women’s Championship.
South Africa Women are currently in Zimbabwe for their first-ever senior tour of the country, featuring five T20Is at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
The delegates unanimously adopted ZC’s audited financial statements for the year ended 31 December last year.
