THE Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) has recorded over 4,5 million fatality-free shifts since its inception, as the State-owned diamond miner continues to strengthen its safety standards.
ZCDC has also recorded zero loss time injury since 2019.
This was revealed after the company scooped gold and bronze accolades during the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), Safety and Health at Work (SHAW) Conference and Awards ceremony held in the resort town of Victoria Falls recently.
According to ZCDC public relations manager Ms Tsungirirai Dhambuza, the recognition underscores the company’s effective safety management systems and its ongoing efforts to ensure the well-being of its workforce.
“Our recognition at the NSSA SHAW Conference and Awards ceremony is testament to the commitment we have invested in safety and health at our workplace,” she said.
“As you may be aware, zero harm is our first and foremost value that we hold so sacrosanct. We operate on the Zero-Harm platform and over the years, we have made enormous investments in systems that ensure that we minimise SHEQ (safety, health, environment and quality) incidents at the workplace.
“I am delighted to say that this has paid off, as currently, we have clocked over 4,5 million fatality-free shifts since inception and we have also recorded zero loss time injury (LTI) since 2019.”
The ZCDC processing team recently came second (surface category) under the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe National First Aid Competitions held in Shamva.
Before that, the company scooped several regional first aid awards under the surface category.
Safety is crucial in the mining industry due to the high risk of various injuries and emergencies associated with this sector.
Effective protocols and standards enable human capital to respond quickly and competently to incidents and accidents, potentially saving lives and minimising the severity of injuries.
