THE Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (ZCPSTU) has called for a comprehensive review of public sector remuneration to ensure that workers can adequately prepare for retirement and enjoy financial security after leaving employment.
Speaking at the Public Service Commission (PSC) Retirement Conference 2026 this morning, ZCPSTU president, Mrs Cecilia Alexander, said improved remuneration was critical to enabling civil servants to build sustainable livelihoods during their working years.
Mrs Alexander said the Government, through the social dialogue platform, should work towards a comprehensive review of remuneration for public sector workers.
“We call upon the Government through the social dialogue platform to work towards a comprehensive and international review,” she said.
She said decent work should extend beyond the last day of employment, with workers requiring adequate social protection and financial security in retirement.
“Decent work does not end on the last day of employment. The principles of dignity, social protection and security must continue beyond the workplace,” said Mrs Alexander.
She said many workers struggle to accumulate wealth during their productive years because of economic pressures, leaving them vulnerable upon retirement.
Mrs Alexander also urged workers to take greater responsibility for their retirement by understanding their pension arrangements and planning their finances early.
“Do not wait until you are close to retirement to think about retirement. Understand your pension plan and your finances,” she said.
She said the ultimate goal should be to build a retirement culture where civil servants approach retirement with confidence rather than fear.
