THE deployment of a Zimbabwe Defence Forces training contingent to Equatorial Guinea last week to train that country’s military officers is part of a bilateral agreement signed between the two countries, a senior officer has said.

ZDF Director-General for policy, public relations and international affairs Brigadier-General John Chris Mupande said Harare and Malabo signed a training agreement covering several spheres including military training under which ZDF details were deployed to Equatorial Guinea to offer training.

He said the ZDF would offer training on operational and logistical matters following a request by the West African country.

“It is basically training under a bilateral agreement signed long back between Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea,’’ Brig-Gen Mupande said adding that the bilateral agreement was not limited to the ZDF but covered other sectors.

‘’It (the agreement) is not exclusive to the ZDF, but covers other areas like tertiary training and vocational training among others,” Brig-Gen Mupande said yesterday.

“It is not the first time that Zimbabwe has done that.

“We actually have students from Equatorial Guinea who are in our tertiary institutions receiving training under the umbrella of that bilateral agreement.”

The security contingent, comprising of members of the Zimbabwe National Army and Air Force of Zimbabwe, was seen off by ZDF Commander General Constantine Chiwenga last Friday.

In his speech, Gen Chiwenga urged the security forces to maintain discipline in the execution of their duties.
