ZEC appoints Chief Elections Officer

THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has appointed Mr Simbarashe Tongayi as the new substantive Chief Elections Officer with immediate effect.

He replaces Mr Utoile Silaigwana who retired at the end of last year.

The Chief Elections Officer is the most senior official at ZEC who works under the direction of the commission and makes sure it fulfils the requirements laid down by the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

Mr Tongayi was the deputy Chief Elections Officer for administration and had been acting as chief elections officer since Mr Silaigwana’s retirement.

As the deputy Chief Elections Officer, he played a crucial role in streamlining administrative processes and enhancing organisational efficiency.

In a statement, ZEC said: “We are excited to embark on this new phase under his leadership and are confident in his ability to lead the organisation to new heights. Mr Tongayi is a seasoned public administration and election management expert with experience in both regional and international elections. His wealth of experience positions him to lead ZEC in achieving its long-term goals.”

Mr Tongayi is a final year Doctorate student in Strategic Management with the Chinhoyi University of Technology. He is a holder of a Master’s Degree in Human Resources as well as another Master’s Degree in Peace, Leadership and Conflict Resolution.

“He recently completed a Master of Science Degree in Defence and Security Studies. He is also a holder of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work as well as being a Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections accredited facilitator,” said the statement.
