Zemura stars for Bournemouth

WARRIORS star Jordan Zemura provided an assist as Bournemouth secured a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in Saturday’s English Premier League football outing at St James’ Park.

The Cherries have avoided defeat in their last three English Premier League matches having now shared the points with the Magpies.

After a goalless first half, the Zimbabwe international teed up Philip Billing two minutes after the hour mark. Nonetheless, they could not hold on to their lead as the hosts restored parity five minutes later courtesy of Alexander Isak’s penalty.

The assist is Zemura’s first goal involvement for the club since April when the team was still in the English Championship.

Zemura received very good reviews for his display against Newcastle with the Bournemouth-based newspaper Dorset naming him his side’s best player on the day.

“Most of the Cherries’ good work came down Newcastle’s right-hand side, with Jordan Zemura typically the free man able to burst forward. He was always willing to take on the full-back and look to cross into the box. At the other end, he stood his ground well, despite tricky movement from Miguel Almiron. He deservedly provided the assist for the breakthrough with a sharp, low delivery,” the publication wrote in their player reviews. The 23-year-old attacking fullback has so far made six appearances in his maiden dance in the English Premier League. He made his league debut on the opening day of the season against Aston Villa. Zemura joined Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba, ex-Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari, Peter Ndlovu (Birmingham City) and Bruce Grobbelaar (Liverpool) as the only fully-capped Zimbabwe internationals to play in the English Premier League.

Meanwhile, another Zimbabwean defender Brendan Galloway was sent-off for a second bookable offence deep into stoppage-time as 10-man Plymouth Argyle conceded a last-gasp goal to draw 2-2 away to Portsmouth in an English League One match at Fratton Park on Saturday.

The Zimbabwe international had been sent on as a 70th minute substitute for Macaulay Gillesphey and picked up his first yellow card for time-wasting as the Pilgrims led late on.

Galloway will be banned for the visit of Ipswich next Sunday after he was dismissed by referee James Bell in the fourth minute of added-on time.

It followed some pushing and shoving between Galloway and Portsmouth’s Michael Morrison as Argyle prepared to defend a long throw-in from Marlon Pack.

No sooner had Galloway left the pitch than a cross from Joe Morrell was headed home by Reeco Hackett to maintain Portsmouth’s unbeaten start to the league campaign and put paid to Argyle’s hopes of a fifth consecutive victory.

Argyle’s manager Steven Schumacher said: “It’s naive from Brendan but their player pushes him first, Brendan pushes him back and their player made a meal of it and fell over.

“Brendan should have done the same when he was pushed first but he never, and we got punished for it.”

Schumacher added: “I thought he (Bell) had given a straight red card so I was going to ask the referee to rescind it, but apparently it wasn’t, it was a yellow and then a red. — Agencies.
