JORDAN ZEMURA’S first spell in English football ended with him training away from Bournemouth’s senior squad following a stand-off over his contract.
Three years and 73 appearances for Udinese later, the Warriors defender is back; this time on a season-long loan at Championship side Watford and with a point to prove.
“I am not here for a vacation. I am not here on holiday. I am here to prove to myself that I can do it,” Zemura told Watford’s official podcast.
“I am here to prove to everyone watching that, ‘Hey, I am back.’ That is the energy I am bringing.”
On paper, Zemura should have little left to prove.
He has played in the Premier League and established himself in Serie A.
Yet, at 26, he is approaching his return to England like a player starting again. Zemura joined Bournemouth in 2019 after earlier spells in the Queens Park Rangers and Charlton Athletic academies.
His breakthrough came during the 2021/2022 season when he made 33 Championship appearances, scored three goals and provided an assist as Bournemouth secured promotion. He played 19 times in the Premier League the following season, but his time at the club ended unhappily after talks over a new contract stalled.
Bournemouth moved him to their development squad during the closing weeks of the campaign before Udinese announced that he would join them on a four-year deal.
Zemura responded by establishing himself in Italy, operating as both a conventional left-back and an attacking wing-back.
His final season at Udinese was disrupted by the thigh injury that ruled him out of the Africa Cup of Nations in January this year.
Zemura made 17 Serie A appearances, down from 27 during his first season in Italy and 23 in his second.
His move to Watford gives him an opportunity to play regularly again in a league he knows well.
The timing also gives the loan added significance.
When Udinese signed Zemura in 2023, the Italian club announced that his contract would run until June 30, 2027.
His Watford loan ends on the same date and his future beyond that has not been made public.
That leaves Zemura with one season to establish himself at Watford before the next decision over his career.
Watford finished 16th in the Championship last season and are seeking a stronger campaign.
The Hornets have a longstanding relationship with Udinese under the Pozzo family, a link that has seen several players move between the clubs.
Regular football at Watford would also help Zemura rebuild momentum with the Warriors after missing the Nations Cup through injury.
He knows the demands of the Championship. He returns with his future beyond this season unresolved and a simple message for those watching.
