THE Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has handed over US$1 520, $21 million and a four-plate gas stove to the Zimbabwe Albino Association for distribution to people with albinism in Manicaland.
The money will mostly be used to buy sunscreen products for distribution to those who need them the most.
The donation was handed over by ZERA chief executive officer Mr Eddington Mazambani in Harare.
In his address, Mr Mazambani said ZERA’s mandate was to ensure that its operations have an impact on societies across the country.
“Apart from issuing out licenses, monitoring for compliance and regulating the energy sector, we have a corporate social responsibility to those we live with, in various environs,” he said.
“If you recall, we held our first tournament last year, whose proceeds we decided will go to Matabeleland North Province. This year, we selected Manicaland Province to be the beneficiary of the 2023 ZERA Golf Tournament.
“Normally, we would have held another tournament, combined the proceeds from both tournaments, then purchase skincare products and protective wear to hand over to the beneficiaries in your Manicaland database.
“However, this time around we saw it fit to handover the proceeds in cash, for you as the association to identify pressing needs in Manicaland Province and then disburse the funds accordingly.”
Mr Mazambani said the donation was a result of pooling resources from stakeholders, including licensees.
Speaking after receiving the donation, Zimbabwe Albino Association project officer Mr Kudakwashe Machiha thanked ZERA for the handy gift.
“We really appreciate the donation as it will go a long way in assisting people with albinism.
“As an association we target the most vulnerable of our members especially in the rural areas.
“We are going to buy sunscreens and distribute them in rural Manicaland,” said Mr Machiha.
